Deal with Wilmot Max Ramsay Square

DEAL WITH (WILMOT) MAX RAMSAY SQUARE

THE EDITOR, Sir:

KINDLY ALLOW me space to comment on a letter published in The Gleaner on Thursday, April 29, 2004 titled 'Now is the right time!', which deals with the W[ilmot] Max Ramsay Square of Cambridge, St. James.

I agree with the writer, Rene Dumas, of Florida.  The Max Ramsay Square needs attention and I hope that the Noel Donaldson-led St. James Parish Council, that august body, will see it fit to effect some meaningful improvements to this central area, the hub of the upper St. James region.

Politics aside, one of the reasons for the establishing of the [Wilmot] Max Ramsay Square, as I recall, is the celebration of youth as was the case in 1985.  There is need for a renaissance.  Lifting a few lines from a Gleaner editorial of Monday, April 12, 2004 'Youth need ... rebirth', the opinion piece says: "If ever there was a time for renewal, rebirth, reawakening of a new spirit in dealing with our young people, it is now[.]...  The nation's youth need their ... epiphany, too.  They need to be treated like the young plants that they are, nourished for growth, pruned for discipline and good order, and provided with hope so that they may blossom for the future. ..."

[Wilmot] Max Ramsay Square is named for not only a public servant but someone, in all aspect, who epitomised youth at a time when youth governmental representation was nil.  Today, the situation is somewhat different.  In conclusion, the Max Ramsay Square deserves a blueprint but in the interim a sanitation programme might suffice.

I am, etc.,
